Prof. Tang Dingyuan visited the School of Information Science and Engineering

Prof. Tang Dingyuan visited the School of Information Science and Engineering and the State Key Laboratory of Crystal Materials, Shandong University from July 12, 2011 to July 16, 2011.
Prof. Tang received his Bachelor degree in Physics from Wuhan University, China, Master degree in Optics from the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechnics, Chinese Academy of Science, China, and Ph. D. degrees from the Hannover University, Germany, respectively. He is an associate professor in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University. His research interests include laser physics and engineering, nonlinear optics and dynamics, ultrafast optics, nano optics, and optics communications. He has done excellent research work in his research areas and published over 140 top quality international journal papers. He has been often invited as a committee member or referee and reviewer for a number of premier conferences and journals, including Physical Reveiw Letters, Physical Review A & E, Optics Letters, Optics Express, etc. Dr. Tang is a member of Optical Society of America.
During his visit, Prof. Tang gave two reports. The first report was “Graphene mode locked ultrafast fiber lasers”. Graphene is a new excellent material. Due to its electronic structure, graphene has attracted much attention since its first discovery in 2004. Graphene also possesses many unique optical properties. It has no band gap, indicating that its absorption is wavelength insensitive. In addition, it has saturable absorption with an ultrafast recovery time. The implication of these results is that graphene could be used as a wavelength insensitive saturable absorber. Prof. Tang introduced the optical properties of graphene and gave the experiment results with graphene mode locked fiber lasers. Prof. Tang patiently answered the questions and discussed with the teachers and students.

The second report was“domain wall soliton fiber lasers”. In magnetism, a domain wall is an interface separating magnetic domains. It is a transition between different magnetic moments. Domain wall is a gradual reorientation of individual moments across a finite distance. Recently, a phase-locked dark-dark vector soliton was also observed in fiber lasers of positive dispersion, a phase-locked dark-bright vector soliton was obtained in fiber lasers of either positive or negative dispersion. Prof. Tang has made excellent research work in fiber mode locked lasers and published many top quality international journal papers. Prof. Tang showed the generation of domain wall soliton in fibe laser and explained the phenomenon in theory. Prof. Tang patiently answered all questions and looked forward to the fiber laser applications.
